Baptism

Are you looking to have your baby or young child (newborn to 6 years old) baptized?  The Newman Center provides baptism preparation classes on a quarterly basis and celebrates all baptisms within the context of the Sunday liturgy.

Please note that parents seeking to have their child baptized should be registered members of the Newman Center, active for at least 3 months. If you are not registered or have not updated your registration within the past year, please stop by the front desk to pick up a parish registration form or fill one out via our website: www.newman-asu.org/about-us/register/

Selecting a Date

Once you have been a registered, active member for at least 3 months, you may contact the Newman Center to begin the process of selecting a date for your child's baptism.

You will need to provide the following documentation:

  • Completed Infant Baptism Registration Form (download below)
  • Copy of your child's birth certificate
  • Letter from at least one godparent, stating he/she is a member of good standing at his/her home parish (unless the godparent is a member of the Newman Center); for more details, please read the "Godparents" section below
  • Copy of at least one godparent's confirmation certificate

Classes

If you are a first-time parent or have not taken a class to be a godparent within the past 3 years, you will be asked to attend an infant baptism preparation class. We offer those classes on a quarterly basis, with the next class likely to be held at the end of September.

To register for this class, please fill out the form below when it becomes available.

Godparents

Parents take responsibility for choosing godparents who will serve as good examples for living the Catholic way of life. A godparent can later serve as a sponsor of the child when he/she is confirmed.

It is customary to have two godparents; however, only one is required for baptism.  A godparent may be either male or female.  If two godparents are chosen, one must be male and one female.

A godparent must be a fully initiated Roman Catholic (baptized, confirmed and receiving the Eucharist regularly), at least 16 years of age. If you have another person who is a baptized Christian but not Catholic, you may invite that person to serve as a Christian witness.

If the godparent belongs to another parish, he or she will need to obtain a letter from his/her parish indicating he/she is a Catholic in good standing. (This is usually a form letter that comes from the parish office.) If the godparent is a member of the Newman Center, we can look them up in our parish directory.
