Social Justice at the Newman Center

As Catholics, we are called to take an active part in the world around us.  Catholic Social Justice at the Newman Center gives students and community members an opportunity to live their Catholic faith by impacting their community.  The groups below are concerned with Social Justice issues.

Andre House Hospitality Ministry

The Andre House is a hospitality center for the Homeless in Phoenix.  Click this link to find out ways the Newman Community is serving there.

I-HELP (International Homeless Emergency Lodging Program)

I-HELP prepares and serves meals two Sundays a month at First United Methodist Church, located across the street from the Newman Center.  Contact Jeanie Ghan at azghanclan@hotmail.com for more information.

Pax Christi

Pax Christi http://www.paxchristiusa.org strives to create a world that reflects the Peace of Christ by exploring, articulating, and witnessing to the call of Christian nonviolence. This work begins in personal life and extends to communities of reflection and action to transform structures of society. The Pax Christi Community at ASU meets at the Newman Center every third Tuesday of month from 6:30-8:00 p.m.  It is a time of prayer and reflection on various topics of peace and non-violence from which we discern a peaceful response that we all commit ourselves to for that month.  For more information contact Fr. St. Vincent de Paul (Newman Center Chapter)

Through your generous financial support, the Saint Vincent de Paul (SVdP) conference serves ASU students and Newman Center community members who are in temporary financial need. Assistance may include rent/mortgage payments, utilities (water, electric, phone), auto insurance, furniture, bus passes and food boxes. Many SVdP members have a background in social service which allows us to properly direct clients with needs we are unable to address to agencies that can better assist them.

Interested in becoming more involved with SVdP? We meet the first and third Thursdays of the month at the Newman Center from 7-8:30 pm. If you are unable to attend a meeting, or would like more information, please contact us at svdpnewman@gmail.com or call us at (480) 233-0032.

Valley Interfaith Project

Valley Interfaith Project (VIP) builds relational power for collective actions in the pursuit of justice and the common good.  We act to strengthen family and community in solidarity with others across lines of race, class and religion.  We are a non-partisan group organizing within the community to address important issues such as health care, immigration, workforce development, education and faithful citizenship.  For more information or to join our listserv, please contact Bob Mings at robertmings@yahoo.com

 

JustFaith

JustFaith is a conversion-based and justice education process that seeks to provide a context in which participants can grow in their commitment to care for the vulnerable and to become advocates for justice.  JustFaith groups meet weekly employing books, videos, guest speakers, discussion, prayer, retreats, and hands-on experiences.  Participants are also afforded the privilege of becoming community with one another and sharing a journey of faith and compassion that is both life giving and challenging.
